Being an ally is a continuous process and it certainly doesn’t stop when we are at work! ️ ️⚧️
Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community still face tremendous challenges at work (11,12,13,14,15,16):
- 30% leave their job because they feel unwelcomed and unsupported.
- 30% experience discrimination while only 3% of non-2SLGBTQIA+ employees do.
- Up to 50% believed they got fired or didn’t get the job because of their identity.
- 58% feel the need to hide who they are at work mainly because they fear they might not get a promotion if they do.
- Persistent wage inequality.
But, inclusion and diversity at work are not only important for the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ members, but they can also benefit the workplace as a whole (7,17).
Inclusive workspaces have been shown to improve (3,7,17,18,19):
- Job satisfaction
- Productivity
- Job retention
- 2SLGBTQIA+ employees’ health
- Motivation
- Commitment
- Customer loyalty
- Stock performance
So everyone wins from being inclusive.
We know that a lot of these efforts can depend on management and that some needed changes might be out of your control. But even if you don’t make the policies at your workplace, being an ally to a colleague who identifies as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community can still help mitigate the negative influence of workplace exclusions.
