“Why should I vaccinate my kids when they are at low risk of severe COVID-19?”
Pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Nisha Thampi breaks it down for us:
- The risk to kids is not zero.
- Children are making up an increasing proportion of the total cases (1, 2).
- Kids are just as likely to be infected as adults (4) and some kids can get seriously sick.
- Kids can develop a variety of short and long term health issues from COVID-19. Ex. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and Long COVID (6,7).
- The vaccine is safe, effective and high quality.
Does vaccinating kids also help protect vulnerable adults and kids around them? Absolutely!
But the main reason kids should get vaccinated is to protect themselves. ️
