The arguments about the benefits of natural immunity against COVID-19 all miss a central point:
To gain natural immunity, one must first survive the infection.
Millions of people around the world have not.
That’s a tragedy, and a failure of our societies to protect the most vulnerable.
Yes, COVID-19 is more likely to be serious for older people and for people with comorbidities.
But youth IS NOT a guarantee of safety. Neither is “no pre-existing conditions” or immune status.
Immunity (no matter how it’s acquired) will lessen the chances of COVID-19 becoming severe. But no one can know for certain the outcome of their infection.
Letting a deadly pathogen rip through the entire population is a dangerous proposition.
