Baby vaccinations: how to soothe the pain

Share:

Nervous about your baby’s vaccine appointment? Here’s how you can make it a positive experience for you and baby.

Things you can GIVE your baby to help:

  • You can apply a numbing cream to your child’s injection site about 45 minutes before the needle.
  • You can mix a sweet solution at home with 1 tsp of sugar and 2 tsp of water and give it to your baby about 1-2 minutes before the needle
  • You can nurse or bottle feed your baby about 5 minutes before the vaccination and continue feeding throughout.

Things you can DO for your baby to help:

  • Assess your Anxiety
  • Breathe deeply if you are feeling stressed
  • Hold your baby in a calm, close, cuddle position
  • Distract your baby

A huge thank you to Dr. Rebecca Pillai Riddell, director of the Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt (O.U.C.H.) Laboratory at York University (@yorkuniversity), for her expertise in pain and fear management in children. Her calming voice certainly makes us feel more relaxed .
