La recherche sur la désinformation, c’est important !

La majorité des Canadien·nes et des Américain·es s’inquiètent de la désinformation (1,2).
Mais plus tôt cette année, une action présidentielle aux États-Unis a mis fin au soutien de la National Science Foundation (NSF) pour la recherche sur la désinformation, en affirmant que cela nuirait à la liberté d’expression (3–6). 🛑

Cette recherche est cruciale. Et la limiter peut faire du tort.

À l’échelle individuelle, la désinformation peut entraîner une perte de confiance, du stress, de la confusion et même des dommages physiques (7–17). 😟
Collectivement, elle nuit à la santé publique, à l’économie, à la démocratie, et alimente violence et discrimination (7,8,12,15–25). ⚠️

La désinformation est étudiée dans plusieurs disciplines : informatique, droit, politique, économie, sciences sociales (16,26).
Ces recherches nous aident à comprendre comment les fausses infos circulent, comment elles nous affectent et comment les contrer (16,26,27). 🔍
Couper leur financement, c’est couper des solutions.

Et non, faire de la recherche sur la désinformation ne brime pas la liberté d’expression (3,4).
La majorité des interventions basées sur les données visent à mieux outiller les internautes — sans supprimer de publications (17,28,29). 🙅‍♀️
Modérer les fausses infos en ligne (soutenu par la majorité des Américain·es, malgré une légère baisse dans les dernières années) n’est qu’un outil parmi d’autres (30–32). 🛠️
