Viral videos are falsely claiming that:
- Sunscreen, not the sun, causes cancer
- A healthy diet alone can prevent skin cancer
- Sunscreen leads to vitamin D deficiency
Encouraging people to not use sunscreen by propagating false information is not only misleading, but incredibly dangerous (10,11).
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada. Each year, over 80,000 people receive a skin cancer diagnosis. From those, more than 10,000 will be of melanoma skin cancer, the deadliest skin cancer type (12,13).
First let’s talk about how sunscreen ingredients are safe and do not cause cancer, but how solar radiation is responsible for the vast majority of skin cancers. Stay tuned, we’ll be digging into more sunscreen myths this week.
When used as directed, sunscreen is safe and protects your skin from harmful UV rays.
