Small scale investigative research shows that in the United States, government and health organizations (e.g. the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention) made considerable advertising payments to 11 news websites that were known for publishing misinformation. It is not clear whether the payments were intentional or inadvertent but the research authors caution health organizations to be careful about where they are advertising.
