With all the buzz about the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the DM’s I received asking me what I thought, @scienceupfirst and I decided to work together on this post.
I’m concerned that the inverted pyramid doesn’t always match what it says in the written guidelines.
I know you’ll discover that there’s mixed messaging that just ends up making it confusing. On one hand saying that saturated fat consumption should not exceed 10% of total calories and then having a stick of butter on the guide. By the by, The American Heart Association recommends <6%.
My advice is to read the guidelines then see how the inverted pyramid reflects the written messaging.
In the meantime check out the Healthy Eating Pyramid from Harvard Health created without industry influence and based on evidence-based science. It’s the plan I follow.
