What does it mean to be a Doctor?

Share:

Let’s talk about doctors!

There are two main types of doctors; one refers to a diploma, while the other refers to a profession.

  • MDs (i.e. Doctor of Medicine) are people that have graduated from medical school and can treat patients.
  • PhDs (i.e. Doctors of Philosophy) are people that have earned a doctorate degree for contributing significant new knowledge to their field. You can get a PhD in any field, even medicine. However, a PhD in medicine is not the equivalent of having a MD. It means you have made a substantial contribution to medical knowledge, but you can’t treat patients.

Some people will use their status as doctors/experts to create trust and push their opinions as certainty. But be careful, while both doctors are essential, they are not the same and therefore can not provide recommendations on the same topics.
