Vaccines matter. ❤️
Around the world cases rose in mid-March. A familiar trend reappeared: places with high vaccine uptake fare better.
Here we compare Hong Kong and New Zealand, two places that experienced a surge of cases in March. But they have drastically different death rates.
The shocking death rates in Hong Kong are in part because of low vaccine uptake. Only 37% of over-80s in Hong Kong have had two doses. Virtually ALL of the over-80s in New Zealand had two shots.

The COVID-19 vaccines work.
This latest Omicron surge has made that painfully clear.
New Zealand and Hong Kong had similar case rates in March, but Hong Kong’s hospitals are in crisis. High vax uptake kept NZ safer.
