Why are there multiple shots for some vaccines and not others?

The need for booster doses depends on three things

  1. How strong the initial triggered immune response is.
  2. If protection wears off over time.
  3. How prone to mutation the pathogen is.

For some diseases, boosters are necessary to ensure adequate protection. For others, one shot is enough to get complete and durable protection.
