Chronic kidney disease is a serious condition that can affect you. As it can be symptomless it’s important to know the risk factors. Early detection of kidney disease may help prevent worsening, so if you feel you might be at risk, talk to a health care provider and they can send you for blood work that will typically detect the condition. (1,2,3,4,5,6)
Certain groups are found to be more at risk than others. Genetics, diabetes and high blood pressure can all increase risk.
People of Asian, South Asian, Pacific Island, African/Caribbean, Hispanic and First Nations heritage are at higher risk for a variety of reasons. Socioeconomic factors, like access to resources and healthcare worker bias,.contribute to the increased risk as well as other factors tied to genetics (6,8). Talk to your doctor about genetic testing if there is a family history of chronic kidney disease.
Protein has become a popular ingredient in just about everything at the moment. If you only have one functioning kidney or suffer from chronic kidney disease it’s best to check your protein requirements with a healthcare provider as they can vary greatly from person to person. (7).
The kidneys have so many jobs to keep you healthy and you can help them out by incorporating regular movement and exercise into your lifestyle. (4,5,6)
