Aluminum in vaccines has been a controversial topic, with some (falsely) claiming it causes many side effects and illnesses.
A large new peer reviewed study from Denmark followed over a million children for more than 20 years and found no link between aluminum in vaccines and conditions like autism, asthma, allergies, or autoimmune diseases. This adds to decades of evidence showing that aluminum adjuvants in vaccines are safe (1,2).
Aluminum is a metal that’s used as an “adjuvant” in many routinely recommended vaccines. Adjuvants help the body mount stronger immune responses. Because we use adjuvants, we don’t need as many vaccine doses or as much antigen (the part in the vaccine your immune system reacts to and learns to recognize). Aluminum is a normal part of our environment and diet, and is safe in the tiny amounts used in vaccines (3,4,5,6,7,8). These adjuvants have been safely included for decades in vaccines such as hepatitis A and B, tetanus, and diphtheria. Depending on the vaccine, the amount of aluminum can range from about 0.1 to 0.8 mg per dose. For comparison, adults typically eat 7–9 mg of aluminum per day, and one antacid tablet alone can contain 10 to 100 times more aluminum than vaccines, without toxic effects (9,10). A baby will get more aluminum from breastmilk or formula in its first six months than from vaccines (5).
Remember, it is the dose that makes the poison.
